The movie is definitely heavy with thrills. Many scenes are effective in stirring up fear and emotion. One of the most anxiety-causing moments of the many in the film was when the pirates threaten to kill Phillips while he is held hostage. Next to Saving Mr. Banks and Castaway, this is one of Tom Hanks heaviest and most powerful movies. His performance is awesome and thrilling; he shows how smart Richard Phillips must have been in the real situation. Another powerful performance was that of the captain Somali pirate, Barkhad Abdi. He is truly scary in this role, next to the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera. The message of the movie is to concur fears, and Hanks certainly portrays this.
Out of ten stars, I would give Captain Phillips a strong 8. If you feel like jumping out of your skin, go see this flick. It's an excellent portrayal of a real event.
